Summaries of Book :

A Bricklayer's Guide to the Galaxy . . . The inspirational memoir of a former brickie who followed his passion for the stars and built his own observatory. Perfect for readers of Robert Macfarlane, Helen Macdonald and James Rebanks - as well as fans of Brian Cox and the BBC’s Sky at Night Gary Fildes left school at sixteen, got a trade like most of his mates and was soon married with four kids. His life seemed set. But he had a secret. Something he only practised late at night with a few like-minded friends. Then one day, middle age approaching alarmingly, he acted on his lifelong passion. He finally came out. As an astronomer. Today, Gary is the founder and lead astronomer of Kielder Observatory, one of the top ten stargazing sites in the world, which he also helped to build. Situated in the beautiful forests of Kielder, Northumberland, within Europe’s largest protected dark sky park, it offers some of the UK's most spectacular views of stars, planets and galaxies. An Astronomer’s Tale is Gary’s inspirational story: part memoir, part nature writing, part seasonal guide to the night sky. It is a book brimming with passion; and at a time when the world is captivated by space, it will leave you ready to get out there and explore the wonders of the skies for yourself.

Book Excerpt:

This guidebook to the Bright-Shadow World develops three closely related issues. The first is the position that fairytales and folktales are of value today because they encourage the growth of capabilities important in our postmodern world. Each of us, like the fairytale hero, sets out on his/her own quests, seeks his/her own identity, faces his/her own dilemmas with few resources but wit, imagination, and a certain power of improvisation. King develops the implications of this situation for such common fairytale problems as learning to read the world productively; navigating various kinds of “edges;” exploiting power sources; developing highly personal moral commitments; problem solving; and data collecting. The second concern of this book is with the development of a system for analyzing narrative structure. The formula offered here involves an examination of interactions among actors, physical settings, lines of force, and power sources as a narrative moves toward its denouement. This system facilitates the classifying, and contrasting of narratives, and illuminates the structure of both narrative and lived experience. Finally, this book is concerned with myth-making or world-making processes. It is shown that traditional narrative actually points to and delineates another dimension of existence (here called “the Bright-Shadow World”) that operates by rules of its own and may be penetrated by individuals from our ordinary world. Inferences about the Bright-Shadow World drawn from traditional narrative are described and evaluated.

New Tales of Mystery and Crime from Latin America

Book Excerpt:

With this volume, readers can enjoy some of the best mystery and crime fiction from Latin America, as Latin Americans have long been devotees of British whodunits as well as North American hard-boiled tales. Here, translated from the Spanish and Portuguese, are eight stories from those countries where the most significant work in mystery and crime fiction in Latin America originates--Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Cuba. A boom in the genre can be observed in the 1970s and 1980s, the period to which these stories belong. In an introductory essay, Amelia S. Simpson explains the background to that boom, and the context that makes Latin American mystery and crime fiction an intriguing and exceptional body of writing within what is often thought of as a formulaic genre with little substance and few literary pretensions. The stories in the present volume cover a range of styles and express a variety of views of what mystery and crime fiction can mean. The elegant and supple voice of Argentine author Ricardo Piglia looks at systems of violence in "The Crazy Woman and the Story of the Crime." With a nod to Raymond Chandler and the hard-boiled school of detective fiction, and a bow to Poe's ratiocinations, Piglia creates one of the most imaginative, intricate in its implications, and original crime stories Latin America has produced. The real horror of Piglia's tale of violence is that it never ends. "Hierarchy," by Piglia's fellow Argentine Eduardo Goligorsky, on the other hand, reaches an explosive conclusion that punctuates another vision of systematic violence. In "Doctor and Doctoring," the Mexican author Luis Arturo Ramos draws on history and memory--a story of haves and have-nots--to bring together two men in a murderous embrace. The next four stories are from Brazil. The first two deal specifically, like Ramos's tale, with the fact of social privilege and authority. Ignacio de Loyola Brandao's "Monday's Heads" shows a deeply rooted social psychosis blossom in the narrow confines of an elevator car. The documentary style of Paulo Celso Rangel's "Deposition" underlines the lack of artifice needed to play this predictable and brutal game of cat and mouse. In "Mandrake," Rubem Fonseca's private eye shows us a deeply disturbed and disturbing side of Rio de Janeiro. Glauco Rodrigues Correa's "The South Bay Crime" provides an amusing look at provincial Brazilians and maintains as well a suspenseful narrative concerning a young boy's mysterious disappearance. Finally, Cuban author Arnaldo Correa's "The Man under the Ceiba Tree" subtly undermines the transparent approach of much socialist detective fiction of the postrevolutionary period. Like all good mystery and crime stories, these can be read simply for pleasure, as well as for the insights they offer into Latin American culture and fiction.

The intoxicating smell of a cube of Walnut pipe tobacco. The watery taste of the cream on the offered sweet. The 'Hello, little boy' as the man steps out of a copse of trees. These, the boy's addiction to the smell of gas, deep poverty, alienation and the 11+ exam build the terrain that explodes into a quarter of a century of political violence. This is life seen through the inquisitive eye of a young boy, his older seven sisters and his band of brothers - who are drawn ever closer by the brutal murder of one of their number. His mother, the epicentre of his childhood, is hostage to the vagaries of biology and the diktats of Catholic Ireland - diktats that are thrown into hilarious disarray with the arrival of American sailors, their Dixie-cup hats and Chesterfield cigarettes.Told with striking simplicity, with sensory information swooping and tearing at our hearts, A Derry Tale - In the beginning binds together credibly with jumps in time. Moments of great comedy, dry humour, and perceptive description pervade this, the first in a trilogy.

Book Excerpt:

Andersen's initial attempts at writing fairy tales were revisions of stories that he heard as a child. Andersen then brought this genre to a new level by writing a vast number of fairy tales that were both bold and original. Initially they were not met with recognition, due partly to the difficulty in translating them and capturing his genius for humor and dark pathos. It was during 1835 that Andersen published the first two installments of his immortal Fairy Tales (Danish: Eventyr; lit. "fantastic tales"). More stories, completing the first volume, were published in 1837. The collection comprises nine tales, including "The Tinderbox", "The Princess and the Pea", "Thumbelina", "The Little Mermaid", and "The Emperor's New Clothes". The quality of these stories was not immediately recognized, and they sold poorly. At the same time, Andersen enjoyed more success with two novels, O.T. (1836) and Only a Fiddler (1837); the latter was reviewed by the young Søren Kierkegaard. After a visit to Sweden in 1837, Andersen became inspired by Scandinavism and committed himself to writing a poem that would convey the relatedness of Swedes, Danes, and Norwegians. It was in July 1839, during a visit to the island of Funen, that Andersen first wrote the text of his poem, Jeg er en Skandinav ("I am a Scandinavian"). Andersen composed the poem to capture "the beauty of the Nordic spirit, the way the three sister nations have gradually grown together", as part of a Scandinavian national anthem. Composer Otto Lindblad set the poem to music, and the composition was published in January 1840. Its popularity peaked in 1845, after which it was seldom sung. Andersen spent two weeks at the Augustenborg Palace in the autumn of 1844. Andersen returned to the fairy tale genre in 1838 with another collection, Fairy Tales Told for Children. New Collection. First Booklet (Eventyr, fortalte for Børn. Ny Samling), which consists of "The Daisy", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", and "The Wild Swans". The year 1845 heralded a breakthrough for Andersen with the publication of four different translations of his fairy tales. "The Little Mermaid" appeared in the periodical Bentley's Miscellany. It was followed by a second volume, Wonderful Stories for Children. Two other volumes enthusiastically received were A Danish Story Book and Danish Fairy Tales and Legends. A review that appeared in the London journal The Athenæum (February 1846) said of Wonderful Stories, "This is a book full of life and fancy; a book for grandfathers no less than grandchildren, not a word of which will be skipped by those who have it once in hand." Andersen would continue to write fairy tales, and he published them in installments until 1872.
