Summaries of Book :

Life presents us with challenges as well as opportunities. It confronts us with obstacles as we journey on, but it also offers us various pathways and routes that we can take. Comparing our life-journey to the travels we make in life, this book is an invitation to readers to face up to those challenges and to meet them through a series of reflections called “comma-moments”: the chance to “stop momentarily and mull things over,” or to “create space in time” as they go about the business of living from day to day. Like commas in a sentence, which help us to read and interpret its meaning properly, a life punctuated with short reflective breaks enables us to draw out its meaning and significance. Drawing on his vast educational background and diverse global travels, the author shares with readers some “thoughts for food” while on our life-journeys. These reflections, as well as anecdotes and stories, also avail themselves of the real-life experiences of others and the wisdom of many contemporary voices and historical figures throughout the world, especially those who have been concerned with the kind of reflection that will help as we move on in life. In particular, it discusses a conceptual life-map to aid us navigate our way in life and to step up to its challenges.

Book Excerpt:

Achieving success in work and in life often requires us to walk in an area that is neither black or white, where the rules are unclear, unwritten, or altogether unknown, leaving us to figure things out as we go along. While this can be difficult to face, embracing the notion of the gray area can help us to work our way toward real accomplishments. Walking in the Gray focuses on working with the unknown, taking actions without all the details, walking between the black and the white. It advocates moving forward with purpose without knowing the right next step. You cannot allow what you do not know keep you from doing what you know you should do. You can make decisions with inadequate information, get out of your own way, and keep yourself from settling because you lack the details to move. You can prevent your haters and your helpers from keeping you from your destination—even when you don’t know the details you need to reach that destination. No matter what, you can succeed in work, at home, and in life. This self-help guide offers you advice on how to succeed in life, the workplace, school, marriage, and church by following rules that are not written in black and white.

People under Construction By: Edwin Zackrison, Ph.D. The issue of recovery is not new to twenty-first-century human beings. We struggle with the need for recovery from injury, disease, and pain. These are largely medical concerns and they can fill our lives with details. People under Construction deals with spirit and relationship. Often a “self-help” book presents a series of steps and secrets. This is not a “self-help book” and the author does not plan to present many steps or secrets. Every chapter will deal with the Spirit and build an understanding of what Christianity does to show the working of the Spirit.

Book Excerpt:

This book is about stillness: What it is. How you can find it. Where it hides itself. Why it is necessary to your life. It is a beginner’s guide, because with stillness, no experience is necessary. Besides, you are always a beginner in any case, because when it is present, there truly is nothing to do and nowhere to go. This book is also about learning to appreciate wandering or meandering along life’s pathways. It does not contain “Six easy steps to wisdom and immortality”. Rather, it offers a way to approach your journey, which you then create and discover on your own, with help! You are invited to find a Pathway to Stillness that fits “your” life. On this pathway, you often cannot see what is around the next bend. However, you need only show up for it to become a journey of curiosity, wonder, and more life. You may come to agree with the phrase, “All who wander are not lost”. Although this is a book about slowing down to stillness, it is a “pickup-and-go” book that can be read in short segments within a busy life. The stillness stories and the easy to learn relax-into-stillness movements can be enjoyed in any order that suits you. You can linger with those that speak to you the most. With this book, you can practise stillness while waiting for an appointment, before going to sleep, or whenever you can steal some time for yourself.

Conceptual Metaphor in Social Psychology

  • Pdf File: conceptual-metaphor-in-social-psychology.pdf

Book Excerpt:

We learn in grade school that metaphor is an ornamental figure of speech reserved for poets. But we now know that it is also a key strategy people use to make sense of the world, from basic concepts like time and causation to the major social issues facing society. In this book, Mark Landau clarifies with wide-ranging evidence the many ways conceptual metaphor guides our thoughts and actions, shining a light on the cognitive underpinnings of social life. Conceptual Metaphor in Social Psychology synthesizes over twenty-five years of in-depth research. Drawing from innovative experiments conducted around the globe, Landau shows conclusively that individuals and groups use metaphor—often unconsciously—to grasp abstractions, make judgments and decisions, communicate, and organize their behavior. Each chapter explores metaphor’s importance for understanding a major topic in social psychology: social cognition, motivation, culture, the self, interpersonal relationships, intergroup dynamics, politics, and health. What emerges is a powerful explanation of how social behavior is shaped by and reflected in our bodily functioning, cultural context, and language use. Integrating insights from cognitive linguistics, anthropology, and personality, this book makes a compelling case that conceptual metaphor has a pervasive effect on human affairs. Researchers in social psychology will discover new ways to think about and investigate these related topics, while students of psychology will learn about an exciting development in understanding enduring questions about who we are and how we got that way.

Book Excerpt:

Life Is a Wheel chronicles the cross-country bicycle trip Bruce Weber made at the age of fifty-seven, an “entertaining travel story filled with insightful thoughts about life, family, and aging” (The Associated Press). During the summer and fall of 2011, Bruce Weber, an obituary writer for The New York Times, bicycled across the country, alone, and wrote about it as it unfolded. Life Is a Wheel is the witty, inspiring, and reflective diary of his journey, in which the challenges and rewards of self-reliance and strenuous physical effort yield wry and incisive observations about cycling and America, not to mention the pleasures of a three-thousand-calorie breakfast. The story begins on the Oregon coast, with Weber wondering what he’s gotten himself into, and ends in triumph on New York City’s George Washington Bridge. From Going-to-the-Sun Road in the northern Rockies to the headwaters of the Mississippi and through the cityscapes of Chicago and Pittsburgh, his encounters with people and places provide us with an intimate, two-wheeled perspective of America. And with thousands of miles to travel, Weber considers his past, his family, and the echo that a well-lived life leaves behind. Part travelogue, part memoir, part romance, part paean to the bicycle—and part bemused and panicky account of a middle-aged man’s attempt to stave off, well, you know—Life Is a Wheel is “a book for cyclists, and for anyone who has ever dreamed of such transcontinental travels. But it also should prove enlightening, soul-stirring, even, to those who don’t care a whit about bikes but who care about the way people connect” (The Philadelphia Inquirer).

uick, what did you have for dinner two months, three weeks, and six days ago? If you're a little fuzzy on the details, you're, well, normal. It's easy to forget something you're not continually thinking about. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Unfortunately, thinking primarily about what's in front of us, i.e., electronic gadgets, squabbling children, or the old woman in church who won't stop whispering to her friend during the service, blocks out some really important stuff. Take, for example, the weighty matters of personal identity, ultimate purpose, and eternal destination. Karl Haffner's wit and wisdom combine in this lightheartedly serious exploration of three questions to which our souls demand answers: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? Living with the answers scribbled on 3 × 5 cards plastered before our eyeballs might reset our priorities for about 30 minutes. Maybe that's why God said something about inscribing His priorities on our hearts. Book jacket.

Book Excerpt:

This is a book about spirituality, more specifically, the spiritual journey. Before beginning any journey or trip—spiritual or otherwise—we experience a state of order. Then comes the call to journey, to travel, to take a trip, to walk, to pilgrimage, to hit the road, etc. The call to begin a journey may come from an urge within us; it may be an invitation from a spouse or a friend to fly somewhere; it may be as simple as taking the dog for a walk in the neighborhood, even taking different streets! The call disrupts our ordered lives. We prepare for our excursion. We enter into the stage of chaos when we take the journey; also, we enter into the process of transformation. By the time we get home, we will be transformed. These are the steps of the spiritual journey into God: order, hearing the call to journey, answering the call with preparation, entering the chaos of the journey, and being and coming home transformed. Ninety-seven reflections are presented in this book in seven chapters devoted to journey; road; path; route, highway, gateway; walk; way; and more.

For Aniceto Enriquez, immigrating to the United States from Guatemala as an illegal alien was one of the riskiest adventures he could undertake. In My Journey, My Life, Enriquez tells the story of leaving his hometown of Livingston, Guatemala, to escape political unrest in the country. Though the journey was fraught with danger and sacrifice, Enriquez and his sister, Lency, left their seaside home in May of 1982 to seek a better life in the United States. From his first job as a dishwasher at a diner in Manhattan and promotion to cook, to learning the English language; meeting his wife, Linda; and earning college degrees, Enriquez provides a meaningful narrative about how faith, self-confidence, and hard work play a role in leading a successful and enriching life. Enriquez tells his story through the historical lens of his heritage. With a unique perspective, My Journey, My Life teaches about Guatemala, the Garifuna people and their culture, and Central America at large. When Enriquez and his sister raced through the tunnel to El Paso, Texas, they had only their dreams to guide them. Though the journey was full of turmoil and uncertainty, Enriquez found light in education, love, and family.

Life's Journey By: Regina Thompson/Miracle 101 Life is a lesson you must learn in order to take the next step. Life is not fair, but who says it’s supposed to be, it’s what you choose to do with your lessons that makes the difference. Life’s Journey is about the different experiences and situations we go through that we are maybe hesitant to tell others, out of fear and/or embarrassment.

Book Excerpt:

This story is about a journey of eight thousand miles across the United States. It is a family’s adventures traveling to the national parks in a thirty-seven-foot RV and going on tours by trains, bikes, mules, hikes, and white-water rafting. It is treating you to the journal that Jenny keeps on the trip. They bring the little people along also. They are just three and four inches tall that Jenny and Jimmy found a few years ago in their barn. The first book was The Little People in the Barn. I wrote and told the story of how the little people got to America, how they traveled the United States, how they ended up in a barn in Glenmore, Pennsylvania, and how that is where Jenny and Jimmy found them. This is my second book about the little people. After being a mother, a teacher, and a nurse, I decided to become an author. My five children are raised. I have retired from nursing and now have the time to write these stories. It has always been a dream of mine to share the feeling that the little people have to express. Who are the little people? Are they us? The ones that the government are in control of, but when the little people gather together in unconditional love, there is no greater story. The little people’s village is a mastermind of undisturbed sighting. They rationalize and talk things out. They have great faith in God, and they are not supernatural in any way. They are just like us, and this is what I want to convey. Who are the little people? They might just be you. Can we learn from them? Yes, we can. The journey across the United States was a wonderful family-oriented trip. It brought the little people closer together, and it brought us closer together. We learned about how the Indians feel, their struggle, and we saw the great skywalk of the Grand Canyon. Yes, I have enjoyed my second book.

Book Excerpt:

Can’t find no satisfaction? There’s no shortage of prescriptions for restlessness out there: Seek adventure. Live your life. Don’t hold back. Sound familiar? The Road Trip that Changed the World is a book challenging the contemporary conviction that personal freedom and self-fulfillment are the highest good. Like the characters in a Jack Kerouac novel, we’ve dirtied the dream of white picket fences with exhaust fumes. The new dream is the open road—and freedom. Yet we still desire the solace of faith. We like the concept of the sacred, but unwittingly subscribe to secularized, westernized spirituality. We’re convinced that there is a deeper plot to this thing called life, yet watered-down, therapeutic forms of religion are all we choose to swallow, and our personal story trumps any larger narrative. This is the non-committal culture of the road. Though driving on freely, we have forgotten where we’re headed. Jesus said His road is narrow. He wasn’t some aimless nomad. He had more than just a half tank of gas—He had passion, objectives, and a destination. Do you?

Book Excerpt:

‘Backpacking With A Bunion’ is a travelogue of discovery and adventure across the countries of S E Asia. The journey begins in Bangkok - where else; and ends up on the island of Flores in Indonesia. My story as a mature ‘gapper’ is outlined in the Introduction, as well as some of the highlights from my trip. The reader if so inclined could follow my journey on a map - it works quite well as a jigsaw, though I have certainly left plenty of room for flexibility and spontaneity. Travel, like life is not always straightforward, but that’s the joy in it. Each chapter is given a descriptive heading to provide a unique flavour to the areas visited. They are roughly in chronological order to give a sense of continuity to my travelling over a period of eighteen months, but could stand alone as set pieces. I have tried to make the book as varied as possible with various quotations, travellers' tales and humour and more serious religious, cultural, political and environmental observations. I have included some facts and figures (where appropriate) on history, geography, transport arrangements, places of interest and personal experiences, thus painting a picture in words of sights, sounds and happenings. The book concludes with S E Asia in a nutshell, a summary of what the traveller might expect and emphasising that travelling changes the traveller. And hopefully reading this book will change the reader’s perspective too.
