Summaries of Book :

From the New York Times–bestselling author of Poison Flower: a retired intelligence officer is caught in “[a] harrowing hunt-and-hide adventure” (The New York Times). To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most sixty-year-old widowers don’t have multiple driver’s licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, or two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run. Thirty-five years ago, as a young army intelligence hotshot, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly assist a rebel army. When the plan turned sour, Chase acted according to his conscience—and triggered consequences he never could have anticipated. To this day, someone still wants him dead. And just when he thought he was finally safe, Chase is confronted with the history he spent much of his life trying to escape. “Perry drives deep into Jack Reacher territory in this stand-alone [novel] . . . Swift, unsentimental, and deeply satisfying. Liam Neeson would be perfect in the title role.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Excerpt:

Now a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek, The Old Man and the Gun is here joined by two other riveting true-crime tales. "The Old Man and the Gun" is the incredible story of a bank robber and prison escape artist who modeled himself after figures like Pretty Boy Floyd and who, even in his seventies, refuses to retire. "True Crime" follows the twisting investigation of a Polish detective who suspects that a novelist planted clues in his fiction to an actual murder. And "The Chameleon" recounts how a French imposter assumes the identity of a missing boy from Texas and infiltrates the boy's family, only to soon wonder whether he is the one being conned. In this mesmerizing collection, David Grann shows why he has been called a "worthy heir to Truman Capote" and "simply the best narrative nonfiction writer working today," as he takes the reader on a journey through some of the most intriguing and gripping real-life tales from around the world.

These are the Faroe Islands as they were some fifty years ago: sea-washed and remote, with one generation still tied to the sea for sustenance, and a younger generation turning towards commerce and clerical work in the towns. At the post-hunt whale-meat auction, the normally cautious Ketil enthusiastically bids for more meat than he can afford. Thus in his seventieth year, Ketil and his wife, along with their youngest son, struggle to repay their debt. They scavenge for driftwood and stranded seals, and knit up a storm of jumpers to sell in town. A touching novel that deftly captures a vanishing way of life. 'The Faroese voted this their book of the 20th century; by any nation's standards it's a classic.' Financial Times

When I was a kid in the late 1950s, while I was a student at Paoli Elementary School, I read the famous children’s book that talks about the Kid from Leftfield. Also around that time, I always said to myself, “What is it going to be like in the year 2000? I’ll be fifty years old!” I couldn’t comprehend being that old; the thought of it scared me, and I’d probably be in a wheelchair or something worse. I bet a lot of people my age thought the same thing. This is the story of what that kid did when he reached the age of fifty.

Book Excerpt:

The year 1957 marked the publication of Robert Ruark’s best seller, The Old Man and the Boy, a tale of “infinite warmth and wisdom, love and understanding “ It told of the Boy, Ruark himself, and the Old Man, his grandfather, as they roamed the North Carolina outdoors together, savoring the sights, sounds, and smells of the earth. As they explored the woods and fished the streams, the Old Man talked and the Boy listened. And as he listened, the Boy learned. The Old Man is now gone from the earth, but not from the memory of the Boy. In the pages of the present book, THE OLD MAN’S BOY GROWS OLDER, the Boy has grown up to new adventures, to college, to a seaman’s berth on a North Atlantic freighter, to African safaris, and treks to the world’s far corners—and to other dogs and boys who now follow him. But the Old Man is still there. He is there in anecdotal memories awakened by the sight of a tiger in Africa, a dog in Spain, or by the tantalizing smell of a hearty meal prepared over an outdoor fire. The echoes of the Old Man’s patient instruction, his gentle humor, and his warm companionship are here again, guiding the Boy as he meets his adult problems and adventures. Today Robert Ruark is world famous as a newspaper columnist and author, big-game hunter and world traveler. His eight books, ranging from the hilarious Grenadine Etching to the realism of his best-selling novels, Something of Value and Poor No More, have won him a wide and faithful audience. Those who are already familiar with the “outdoor Ruark” will again find a wealth of entertaining and instructive lore, a poetic and nostalgic reliving of the seasons on these pages. Those readers, young and old, who have not yet looked into this corner of Ruark’s world are new in for a delightful discovery.

Book Excerpt:

David and the Old Man is a true life story about a father and his oldest son. The father a rugged, independent, stubborn and selfserving man who grew up on a farm where growing food became the only way to survive. He carries this farm mentality into his own family situation and has an enormous garden which primarily provides for his wife and four children. He grows and stores enough food for his family, all the neighbors and friends. Beyond his own belief, the Old Man’s first son is not the rugged individualist he pictured his first son to be. David, as a youth, appears to have all the normal tendecies of any other kid, but does not fully develop physically and has a dislike of certain foods. The psychological battle between father and son is further nututred by the Old Man’s dislike for David’s passive and unfatherlike personality. David develops anorexia nervosa patterns in the early 1960’s and becomes a full blown anorexic case by his late teens. What is unusual about this-- David is a male, completely rare for this disease and exceptionally rare for that time period in which it occurred. The family battles the Old Man’s will and lives with a son or brother who displays no regard for himself or those close to him.

Book Excerpt:

Richmal Crompton's adult novels are an absolute delight and every bit as charming as her beloved Just William series. The Old Man's Birthday is both a nostalgic treat for fans of the gentler brand of interwar fiction, and a dry satire of British village life. Matthew Rowston is turning ninety-five. A lovable rogue approaching his dotage, he has very little time for the high moral standards and rigid ideas of propriety espoused by his spinster daughter. Things get interesting when he invites his estranged son, the bright and lively Stephen, and his beautiful partner to his celebratory dinner. Over the course of the day, Matthew walks around the village, introducing the pair to his large and varied clan, from the aging Jolly-hockey sticks granddaughter who is considering a torrid affair of her own, to his elderly bookish bachelor son and the lovely great-granddaughter struggling to find her place in the world, doomed to work as a clerk in her dull and dismal father's firm. Teeming beneath the calm surface of village and family life, lies a whole world of secrets and desires, hopes and dreams. Mrs Dalloway with a dash of dry humour, Mapp and Lucia with a slightly melancholy tone, this is the perfect heritage read for fans of 1930s fiction at its best.

Book Excerpt:

Ride with a father and his son on an amazing journey through America's past. In the summer of 1939, with the nation balanced between the Great Depression and the gathering winds of war, young Jack Newkirk set off on a rickety Harley to see both the New York and San Francisco World's Fairs. He had no way of knowing it was to e the autumn of his youth, and that his entire generation would soon be thrust into the most devastating conflict in history. Seven decades later, author John J. Newkirk retraces this epic ride with his father, Jack, in a silent hope the old soldier will still be proud of the America he fought for. Each mile brings discovery as the author learns of his namesake, the heroic Squadron Leader of the legendar Flying Tigers, and of his father's life on the road and in the jungles of the South Pacific during World War II. The result is quintessential Americana, a sweeping portrait of the grit, guts, ingenuity, and sacrifice that defined a nation, and a timely lesson from the Greatest Generation on how we can overcome our most pressing challenges and reclaim the American Dream.

Book Excerpt:

So who is Omar Eby? A retired English professor (tenderhearted and cynical) who looks with affection and severity upon the young man he once was in Somalia. Ebys first chapter Learning My Name quickly and playfully sets the tone for this fascinating memoir, The Boy and the Old Man. Identifying with one Omar after another, Eby skips from a Taliban terrorist and a four-star general to a translator of Somali tales and an Old Testament duke; then recalls an English student in Mogadiscio and an Epicurean Persian poet; meets a Chilean Anabaptist and finally names the close friend of Prophet Muhammad, Omar ibn al Khattab. You think this an exercise in narcissism? Of course notthe author finds too many ties linking a nave Mennonite missionary boy to Muslim society and the incredible beauty of the natural worldshows too well the tensions between documented facts and dramatic memory. On the horn of Africa, Somali pirates seize tankers. On the mainland, clans fire rockets into each others quarters of Mogadishu, once the capital of the Somali Republic. But Omar Eby remembers another Somalia, when he taught there 50 years ago. Through the grid of accumulated years, Eby studies that missionary boy. The reader hears two voices: the 23-year old boy and the 73-year old man. Often the old man loves the boy; often the boy embarrasses him. The Somalis, Eby remembers as beautiful and exasperating, then, in 1959, as now, in 2009. The chapters are like a series of transparencies laid down one on top of the other. The boys views overlaid by the mans two visits to Somalia in his thirties and then memory laid over everything. With more details, everything should be clearer. Yet, Eby writes in the Introduction, we are pleasantly surprised to find that the historically reconstructed self is still blurred, as muddy as the Shebelli River which flows through Somalia from the Ethiopian highlands.

Book Excerpt:

‘I not only write books. I am this book. The actual person or persons.’ ----------- After a flash flood in 1965 an elderly man became trapped down a Sydney parkland storm drain. Children discovered him but did not tell their parents. Instead they fed him a biscuit and a little water once a day for three weeks. When he was finally rescued, the flesh on his legs had become putrescent. He could not remember how long he had been down there. Bill Reed extends this situation to explore the interaction of innocence and inhumanity that is so prevalent in these days of random violence. Here, the old man, like so many others, has come to Australia with all the hopes of regeneration. But the sun has not shone on him very much and his brother and sister have disowned him. He has had to live in sordid hostels and to endure the barbs of a society that pays respect only to the fittest. As his minds drifts, the old man dreams he is back home in Belfast. He has got beyond the smell of his own rotting flesh and the fleas and rats. He no longer feels the cold or works up the desperation to plead with the children to get help. He floats mentally, waiting for the final water-rush of the coming last storm. And as he does so, the author uses himself as a character to the story, as one of the brutalisers, the sheer fact of writing about the old man in this terrible state possibly morally aligning him to the teasing, torturing children. Using Edward Nugent’s ‘real’ writings to give an authentic voice to the old man doesn’t help his frame of mind either. ---------------- Bill Reed has been involved in writing and publishing for most of his life, in Australia, Britain, Canada and the Subcontinent. He has had nine plays professionally staged and has written thirteen novels, including ‘1001 Lankan Nights’ books 1 and 2. He has won national awards in playwriting, short story and novel categories. He now resides in Sri Lanka. Edward Nugent was born in Belfast in 1900 and migrated to Australia after WW2, eventually living in a Salvation Army home in Adelaide where his major preoccupations were his manual typewriter and his old ‘fiddle’. He tragically died in a room fire in 1979, two days after receiving an advanced copy of this book. The quote above was his reaction.

Book Excerpt:

This is a story of adventure and magic. A fantasy book for both the young and old readers alike. This is a story greatly enjoyed by 3rd and 4th graders. The Old Man from Mon-Ton had visited the village for as long as anyone could remember. However, none gave him more than a passing thought. That is until one day, a young man, Bowdean, could not stop thinking about the old man and where he lived. He followed him to his home, built into the heart of the Great Mountain, Mon-Ton. Bowdean was told that it was his "Destiny" to go on a quest. The old man showed Bowdean how to cross the desert, capture an Elf to gain his help in getting past big lizards, face a Troll, cross a long valley, and find the key, a large ruby, to gain access to another scroll. Using this scroll, Bowdean continued the quest, and found a Unicorn in a small valley. The Unicorn turned into a Pegasus and flew Bowdean over the mountains into a grand canyon, right into a battle with many Dragons.

Book Excerpt:

He’s the “old guy in the club” who everyone judges and scorns, but there’s so much more to his story…Travel into the mind and soul of a complex man on the road to redemption in this riveting, true-to-life novel. Almost everyone who has been to a nightclub has seen him: the “old man in the club.” He’s the graying, balding loner looking totally out of place, like he could be everyone’s father. Or grandfather. And almost everyone’s wondering the same thing: Why is he in here? In Curtis Bunn’s The Old Man in the Club, you learn why. Meet Elliott Thomas, sixty-one years old, and not afraid of spending a night among twenty-something strangers. But his motivation for hanging out in clubs isn’t his fear of growing old; it’s his desire to “catch up on what I have missed.” Life hasn’t been easy for Elliott, and now he’s on a journey to redemption. How he goes about it, however, gives some people pause. Some find him charming, some find him creepy. The women his age find him disgusting. His buddies marvel at his nerve. His children loathe his existence. But no matter who judges him, Elliott is set on reclaiming his youth—the way he wants to. A page-turner that outlines the depth, complexities, and motivations of an intriguing character, this novel will surprise and touch you—and make sure you’ll never look at the “old man in the club” the same way again.
